Stamp Day
Christine Böhmwalder, Head of Philately at Liechtenstein Post, warmly welcomes the audience to this seminar. She enthusiastically invites everyone to explore this picturesque European nation with its unique cultural heritage. She also looks forward to seizing this opportunity for exchange at the “Macao 2026”. By using these tiny philatelic items as a bridge, she hopes everyone can truly experience the local customs and artistic charm of Liechtenstein's stamps, kicking off a truly meaningful dialogue on philatelic culture.
Cynthia Li will present the content in three parts. The first part provides a brief overview of the Principality of Liechtenstein, a microstate in Central Europe nestled in the Alpine Rhine Valley, renowned for both its stunning scenery and highly developed economy. The second part explores the origin of its reputation as the "Kingdom of Stamps". Since issuing its first stamps in 1912, Liechtenstein has become famous for its diverse themes, exquisite designs, and top-tier printing craftsmanship. Having won numerous awards at international philatelic exhibitions, it is globally recognized as a benchmark of high quality in the global philatelic community. The third part focuses on the cultural significance of these stamps and the ties between China and Liechtenstein. Serving as a "national business card", stamps act as an important bridge for cultural exchange. Liechtenstein Post and Macao Post and Telecommnications share a profound connection, having jointly hosted the "Stamps Around the World - Liechtenstein, Kingdom of Stamps" exhibition and issued the "Glamorous Macao" commemorative stamps. Furthermore, through long-term collaborations with China—such as issuing Zodiac-themed stamps and organizing joint exhibitions—these tiny squares of paper continue to deepen friendships and foster mutual learning between Chinese and foreign cultures.
Head of Philately Liechtenstein, leads with great dedication and, together with her team, devotes herself daily to preserving and developing Liechtenstein’s rich stamp-collecting tradition. As a passionate designer with a keen eye for art, aesthetics and cultural values, she uniquely blends tradition and innovation with contemporary design.
Under her leadership, stamps are created that are far more than mere postage stamps. They are small works of art, cultural ambassadors and the identity of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Each issue tells its own story and conveys impressions of the country’s nature, history and culture.
Liechtenstein’s stamps are highly regarded worldwide; in Asia in particular, this cultural heritage from the Principality of Liechtenstein is admired, a fact attributable above all to the exquisite design, high quality and rarity of the stamps.
It is with great pleasure that Christine Böhmwalder represents the fascinating world of Liechtenstein philately at the World Stamp Exhibition in Macao, inviting visitors to discover more about Liechtenstein’s cultural diversity and creative traditions.
Since 2011, Cynthia has served as the Chief Representative in Asia-Pacific Region at Liechtenstein Post. She is primarily responsible for promoting Liechtenstein's culture and facilitating cooperation on stamp projects related to Chinese culture.
She conceptualized and spearheaded the Asian touring exhibition "Going into 'Kingdom of Stamps' – Liechtenstein", which has been showcased at prestigious venues including the Communications Museum in Macao, Nanjing Museum, Hangzhou Museum, Yangzhou Museum, Changzhou Museum, Zhoushan Museum, and the Suzhou Zodiac Stamp Museum. Furthermore, she successfully brought the works of renowned Chinese artists such as Qi Baishi, Zhang Ding, Han Meilin, and Wu Weishan to the Liechtenstein National Museum. She also played a key role in coordinating high-quality exhibitions from institutions like the National Museum of China, Beijing Fine Art Academy, National Art Museum of China, and Shanghai Museum for display at the Liechtenstein National Museum. Additionally, she has collaborated with museums and artists across China to design stamps commemorating diplomatic relations between China and Liechtenstein, as well as stamps featuring cityscape themes.
With the support of the Liechtenstein Post headquarters, Cynthia utilizes stamps as a cultural bridge. By deeply cultivating two-way cultural exchange, she continues to advance collaboration between the two nations and strengthen their enduring friendship.

Some scholars have credited the British Superintendent of Trade Lord Napier with establishing the first British post office in 1834, hence the first foreign post office in China. The author argues that having established the Correio Maritimo in Macao and appointed its first administrator in 1798, the Portuguese in fact ran the first foreign post office in China. Then in 1826 a group of private merchants invested into and operated the Macao Boat Office, ferrying between Canton and Macao and charging 10 cents for letters. This is the first private post operated by foreigners in China.

When people think of technology in 2026, they think of digital automation, high-powered lasers, and smart engineering. So, when they look at a modern postage stamps, they probably assume it’s the product of purely cutting-edge, 21st-century innovation. But it isn’t. The truth is, modern stamp production is a massive illusion. It is cutting-edge quality existing at the opposite end of innovation, so Brebner Print is going to look under the hood of the postal industry to see how the stamps today are manufactured. What it will find is that the printing industry has actually not invented new ways to print stamps. It has just invented faster ways to drive very old wheels.
Brebner Print has been in business for over 45 years, servicing local and international customers with award-winning postage stamps, packaging, promotional and commercial print.
